In tedious and detail-loving passion, craftsmen and amateurs have recreated a frigate true to the original. The ship can be visited in Rochefort – a city that played a significant role in the history of French seafaring.
In 1780 the Hermione brought General de la Fayette to America, who supported colonists in the War of Independence. In 1793, Hermione disappeared during an important mission.
It is unbelievable how much effort was spent on the reconstruction of the three-master – it took 17 years to finalize the work. And on September 7, 2014, the time had finally come: the Hermione dropped off for the first time to test the seaworthiness. Shortly after, in April 2015, the Hermione set sail towards America. This year, a trip through the Mediterranean with numerous stops followed. Every journey involves about 80 people on board – and everyone has to work hard. For comparison: In the past, such a ship was traveling with a crew of 200 people!
The production of the Hermione was made directly next to the “Corderie royale” at the Arsenal Rochefort. This was once the longest rope factory (the building is 374 meters long), and has since been turned into a museum. On this occasion, of course, I also turned a rope myself 😀
A real thrill for a sailors heart 😀
